A Writer’s Guide to Living Well: Surviving and Thriving in Brokenness

Edie here: Feeling weighed down by conflict, loss, or broken relationships? In this blog post, discover 5 practical tips for writers to stay creative, find resilience, and live well—even in life’s toughest seasons.

A Writer's Guide to Living Well: Surviving and Thriving in Brokenness
by Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHutch0767

Writing is a lot like life—it’s full of conflict, action, and suspense. The difference is that in our novels, we control the plot twists. In real life, we don’t always get that privilege.

Often, the stress of broken family relationships, the ache of distance between you and a loved one, or the weight of loss presses in so hard you can’t see straight—let alone write straight. And yet, deadlines and obligations don’t stop to give you a breather.

I’ve been there. I’ve faced days when the personal hurt felt so heavy that sitting at my desk to string words together seemed impossible. But I’ve learned in the trenches that you can survive and even thrive during brokenness. The secret is to remember that your worth isn’t in what you produce, but in how you live.

The Art of Rejection for Writers

by Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHutch0767

Recently, I entered three prestigious writing contests—two secular and one Christian. As I waited for the results to come in, I was confident. After all, I’d poured my heart into my submissions, refined every word, and even dared to imagine what it might feel like to win. I envisioned the announcement, the applause, the emails of congratulations. But one by one, the results came in—and I didn’t place. Not even an honorable mention. Nothing.

The Pursuit of Wisdom in the Writing Journey

by Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHutch0767

Finding wisdom is a blessing, and understanding is invaluable.

Recently, I’ve been immersed in my home recording studio—what some might call my version of a creative workspace, equipped with a microphone, computer, and a headset. Many might be surprised to find out that I write suspense and devotions. I’m also a freelance editor and coach. However, the thriller genre captivates me so much that I launched a podcast a few years ago titled Murder Mystery and Mayhem Laced with Morality. The show has gained listeners from around fifty-four countries, with a growing audience of nearly 3,000. I’ve had the privilege of hosting numerous talented, award-winning authors and experts, which has been a thrilling experience for me!

Yet, none of this happened by chance. My journey into writing and podcasting was paved with knowledge, mentorship, and dedicated training. Transitioning from a career in education to writing wasn’t an easy feat. Before starting my podcast and embracing my writing career, I participated in workshops, sought mentorships, and engaged with various writing communities. Some pivotal moments that helped shape my career came from attending writing conferences, especially the Blue Ridge Christian Writers Conference (BRMCWC), and I’d like to share a few highlights.

What's a Writer to Do While We Wait

by Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHUTCH0767

Waiting is one of the hardest parts of the writing journey. You’ve poured your heart into a manuscript, pitched to agents and editors, entered contests, and submitted proposals—yet, the answer hasn’t come. Or worse, it has, and it’s another no. Meanwhile, your calendar is full, your creativity is stretched, and your inbox is buzzing. You’re busier than ever, yet you’re still waiting for the yes that seems just out of reach.

I’m in the middle of that very season. I have multiple projects in the works—books, proposals, and editorial responsibilities. From the outside, it looks as if things are moving. But contracts haven’t landed. Doors haven’t opened. And there are moments when discouragement creeps in and whispers, “What’s the point? Who do you think you are? Why don’t you give up? No one cares what I have to say. My words don’t matter.”

The Enduring Relevance and Power of Written Words: 3 Essential Tools for Writers

by Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHutch0767

“Words illuminate pathways that we may not have seen otherwise.”

Several years ago, I was in Jamaica for a wedding, immersing in the vibrant culture and connecting with family. One of our stops was in a rural town where my father’s family lived. We stayed with my aunt, who lived a simple life without modern distractions like TV or the internet. After a few days of enjoying the quiet, we were thrown into an unexpected blackout during dinner. My aunt sprang into action, rummaging for candles and kerosene lamps to light up our surroundings. This moment turned an otherwise mundane visit into a memorable evening filled with laughter, old photo albums, and cherished stories. It highlighted how slowing down can help us reflect on what truly matters.

In today's fast-paced world, finding clarity and inspiration can be challenging. Writers are often inundated with competing voices, ideas, and information, making it hard to discern what resonates. This is where the power of words—both written and spoken—comes into play.

Writers Write: How to Keep Writing When You Don’t Feel Like It – 5 Key Strategies

by Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHutch0767

My mentor once impressed upon me the importance of consistency in writing, emphasizing that if I wanted to be a writer, I had to make it a non-negotiable part of my daily life—no excuses allowed. This advice resonated deeply, but it was my husband who truly took it to heart, encouraging me to create a dedicated home office space that would nurture my creativity and focus. His unwavering support has been instrumental in my journey, reminding me that every day I write, I’m one step closer to realizing my dream. Together, their encouragement has instilled in me a sense of discipline and determination that has become the foundation of my writing practice.

However, the truth is that even the most passionate writers face days when the words seem to hide. The blank page can feel more like a challenge than a canvas for creativity. However, writing isn’t just about waiting for inspiration to strike—it’s about building habits, embracing imperfections, and learning to push through even when motivation is low.

Building Our Writing Brand with Authenticity and Consistency

by Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHutch0767

A few years ago, I was at a crossroads. After many years in educational administration, I began my writing career in nonfiction. When the opportunity arose to write thrillers, I thought I needed to create two online personas. I’d even come up with a pen name. However, when I started working with a publicist, he discouraged me from doing so. He highlighted my hard work in building my brand as a Caribbean-pink-loving-devotional-writing-person-of-color. He encouraged me to stay true to who I am across genres. Although it felt like a bold venture, I’m grateful I took the leap.

Key Strategies for Networking and Building Author Platform

by Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHutch0767

Growing up, my father owned a construction company and mom was a nurse. However, my parents knew about the fundamentals of investing in real estate. I recall them stressing the importance of location, location, location. In the publishing industry an analogous mantra would be platform, platform, platform

In the ever-evolving world of writing and publishing, knowing the fundamentals is important. Therefore, building a solid platform as an author is essential for success. Whether we’re an aspiring novelist, a seasoned writer, or somewhere in between, networking can open doors to valuable opportunities and connections.

Surrendering our Writing to God’s Plan

by Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes
@KHutch0767

Throughout my journey as an author, I’ve encountered successes and failures, difficult times, and moments of triumph. Despite achieving publication victories, I grapple with disappointment, closed opportunities, and rejection. During these challenging periods, I seek solace in God, which helps me to recall that there’s much to appreciate. Ultimately, I’m reminded that God is at the center of each struggle and victory, especially when we embrace the power of surrender.

Five Ways to Stay Relevant as an Author

by Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHutch0767

I remember getting my first Walkman as a teen. My world was transformed as I jammed out to cassette tapes of Prince, Madonna, and Sade. In college, I embraced CDs and upgraded to a CD player. Nowadays, I play music and podcasts through a streaming device. However, I’m sure updated technology will eventually replace this invention. Things change rapidly in technology, impacting everything, including the publishing industry.

As an author, it can be challenging to remain current in a swiftly evolving world. Adapting to the continuous advancements in technology and changing trends is crucial to staying relevant in the dynamic writing environment.

Use Your Travel Experience to Transform Your Writing and Inspire Your Creativity

by Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHutch0767

When people travel, they often use their experiences for transformative creative inspiration. But is this realistic for writers? Is keeping a writing routine while exploring new places, vacationing solo, or with friends and family feasible? Two of my favorite things to do are travel and writing. I’ve found utilizing the following six tips helpful in keeping up with my writing routine.

What Editors Wished Writers Knew

by Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHutch0767

I’ve always thought of myself as a writer first and then an editor. There are distinct differences between the two roles. Throughout my experience as an editor, I’ve encountered a few scenarios that can sometimes lead to misunderstandings between writers and editors. This is regrettable because our objectives are often aligned—to produce a well-written project, publish it, and potentially receive recognition. The cherry on top or goal would be to have all these things and get paid.

How a Writer Looks at the Thriller Called Life

by Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHutch0767

When authors pen thrillers, they must utilize three fundamental elements to help them craft, outline, and compose their book. These are known as the three Cs—the contract, the clock, and the crucible. The contract refers to the promise made to the reader that they will gain specific information by reading the book. The clock constantly pressures the protagonist to figure out their problem against a stringent timeline. The crucible is the pivotal part of the book when the antagonist and protagonist usually face off, and the protagonist is changed, arrives at a revelation, or solves a crucial problem.

Three Great Reasons Writers Should Attend Conferences

by Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHutch0767

My first writer’s conference was the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference. This experience was life-changing for me. I didn’t know anyone there and had little knowledge about the publishing industry. I attended the conference feeling a mix of excitement and fear but eager to learn. I was even more excited, scared, and anxious to learn when I left. Even now, after several years of working as a professional editor, book coach, podcaster, freelancer, and published author, I still experience the same emotions I felt at that first conference. However, these emotions drive me to keep developing my faith and skills as a writer.

While there are numerous benefits to attending writing conferences, here are my top three:

Seven Keys for Becoming a Successful Writer

by Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHutch0767

I didn’t know what I was doing when I self-published my first book. My goal for that project was to help raise money for a family returning to the mission field in Mongolia. I thought the book was successful because I’d helped meet the intent, and the family was fully financed to live as missionaries. I had no clue about the impact of book launches, street teams, and utilizing social media to promote my book.

I also thought it’d be easy to get an agent and have my book sold to a traditional publisher. But, when I attended a writer’s conference shortly after my book’s debut, I discovered I was wrong, and I’d done almost everything backward. A few weeks after returning home, I received a rejection letter from a well-established literary agency who’d expressed interest. The main gist of the letter was I had no platform. I still use that letter as a blueprint for becoming a successful writer. Over the years, I’ve also discovered seven fundamental keys for accomplishing this feat.

Five Steps that Will Help Writers Combat Imposter Syndrome

by Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHutch0767

In middle school, I had my initial experience with performing in theatre. It was the first time I felt I could escape into my role as a cabaret singer. I was no longer the nerdy girl who wore skirts every day. Instead, I was part of a group of glamorous performers who presented Broadway vignettes. At times, I felt like a fraud, but our theatre directors insisted that we fully engage with becoming the characters we had been chosen to play. Although I struggled with feeling like an imposter, the more I allowed myself to escape into becoming the character I had been selected to represent, the easier my role became.

As Christian authors, many of us struggle with imposter syndrome, the same way I struggled to accept my role as a cabaret singer in middle school. Imposter syndrome for writers is the feeling that we’re not good enough and don’t belong in the writing community. This is a common problem many writers face, but it can be particularly challenging for those writing from a Christian perspective.

Setting Goals for Our Writing Journey

by Dr. Katherine Hutchinson-Hayes @KHutch0767

As Christian authors, we are blessed with a unique opportunity to share our faith with the world. We can inspire and uplift our readers through our writing, providing them hope, guidance, and encouragement on their spiritual journey. However, achieving success as a Christian author is a challenging feat. It requires more than just talent and passion for writing. We need a clear understanding of our goals and a well-defined plan.

This includes identifying our target audience, developing a solid brand, building a platform, and engaging with our readers through various channels. Additionally, we must be willing to continually grow and improve our craft, seeking out feedback and guidance and staying up to date with the latest trends and techniques in the publishing industry. With dedication, perseverance, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can achieve great success as writers and positively impact our readers’ lives.
