Our Writing Has Power to Speak Truth into Others

By Brenda McGraw @BrendaMMcGraw

What was the last best-selling book you read that changed your thoughts from negative to positive?

One of my favorite books was The Circle Maker by Mark Batterson. It changed me and gave me hope for a future in writing. The book is about praying. Our prayers change others and us. The Circle Maker teaches us ways to pray.

Did you know if you are a writer you to have the power to change other’s lives? The words you write have power. They can speak life into your readers. Choose them wisely.

The Confidence to Be Creative in Writing

by Brenda McGraw @BrendaMMcGraw

As I was walking past my office, I seemed to be able to find everything under the sun to distract me from what I needed to get done. There was mail to be opened, bills to pay, phone calls that needed to be returned, not to mention the stacks of papers and files that needed to be filed away where they belonged.

Remembering that a deadline was quickly approaching for an article that needed to be written, with no vision of what it would even be about, I found myself stuck.

Setting Goals for Your Writing Career

by Brenda McGraw @BrendaMMcGraw

Setting Goals for Your Writing Career
I hope you had a very Merry Christmas. Can you believe it is the end of another year?

How did you do with your goals and plans this year?

The end of the year is the time to evaluate the current year 2015, before heading into 2016, so we can begin with a fresh start.

Sometimes this can be difficult. We can make excuses of what we didn’t get accomplished or we can resolve to execute the plans we will accomplish the upcoming new year.

We're Not Meant to do this Writing Thing Alone

by Brenda McGraw @BrendaMMcGraw

Alone again, me and my words.

When was the last time you felt like you were on your own with no one by your side or encouraging you?

Writing is sometimes a lonely calling.

We touch the keyboard and are supposed to type words and make them jump off the page and touch the hearts and lives of others.

How Do I Finish Writing a Book?

by Brenda McGraw @BrendaMMcGraw

“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” Philippians 2:4 (ESV)

How do I finish writing a book?
“How can I help you?” Those have been powerful words to me on this writing journey. We need each other, and realizing we are not alone is important to our growth.

We need people on the path towards being an author.

Do you have a dream to be an author one day? Have you envisioned what that journey will look like?

I’m not sure exactly how I got here, other than taking one step and then another. Living in the writing world has changed my life. I’ve met some amazing people whom I might not have had I never pursued my calling to write a book.

Kindness Leads to Joy

by Brenda McGraw @BrendaMMcGraw

Kindness leads to joy.
Because of her kindness, she saw Jesus.

Have you ever heard of Joanna of the Bible?

She is not preached about, nor am I aware of any books referencing her story; however, God felt she was important enough to be mentioned in His Word. He apparently thought her kindness deserved a note in the scriptures.

Would you like to know more about this mysterious woman? Let’s see what the Bible says:

Why Are You Worried?

by Brenda McGraw @BrendaMMcGraw

“I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from?” Psalm 121:1

My help comes from the Lord.

If we live long enough we are going to have something that rocks our world. It steals our peace and joy. I call these “Joy Zappers.”

What is stealing your peace and joy today?

Is it the lack of money, or debt? What has you worried?

Sickness and pain can zap our joy and steal our peace.

Do You Ever Get Tired of the Wait?

by Brenda McGraw @BrendaMMcGraw

Waiting is hard.
Waiting is hard. When growing up, we wait to turn 13 years old, and then 18. We anticipate turning 21 so we can feel like an adult.

Many of us dream about our wedding date and wait for the perfect spouse. Then we have to wait to get married.

Pregnancy lasts nine long months before we’re rewarded with a baby. At that point we can’t wait until the infant starts sleeping all night. We push through, loving every minute of parenthood, but cannot wait until they can dress and feed themselves.

Hope for a Healthy Heart

by Brenda McGraw @BrendaMMcGraw

My brother-in-law just got out of the hospital after being admitted for chest pains. This Friday they are flying to South Carolina for my daughter’s wedding. Of course, all kinds of thoughts float through our heads.
  • “Will he be okay?”
  • “Will they keep him in the hospital, and neither he nor my sister will make it to the wedding?”
  • “What if he has to have surgery to have stent placement?”

His hope is for a healthy heart. Our hope is for everything to be okay and that our plans will go as scheduled.

However, sometimes our plans don’t work out. Things are out of our control.

The Worry Room vs. The “War Room”

by Brenda McGraw @BrendaMMcGraw

When we worry, we whine. We whine about our finances, job, children and spouse. Then there is the worry that goes with aging parents who need us to assist them to the doctor or with household problems, or maybe they even live with us. What about the loved ones who are away serving our country, and we don’t even know where they are? We worry.

I have never had a nineteen-year-old son go into the military and leave the country, but many have, and I can’t imagine the worry that accompanies the fear of the unknown.

Reasons for worry are everywhere. We wake up to daily concerns and go to bed with them every night. When we worry—and I venture to say we have all done this—we enter an area that, as believers, God has told us not to. He plainly says, “Do not worry.”

Inspiring Ideas to Overcome the Blank Page

Edie here. I'm excited to announce the newest member of The Write Conversation blogging team. I know you all have already been inspired and encouraged by Brenda McGraw and now we'll be hearing from her regularly!

Inspiring Ideas to Overcome the Blank Page
by Brenda McGraw @BrendaMMcGraw

The achievements of the tomorrows in our life are many times paralyzed by a lack of inspiration that prevents us from effectively moving forward.

We get stuck.

Many times we want to experience the finality of what we are moving towards without taking the steps to get there.

We must somehow get past the silence in our mind that is paralyzing us.

For example, you’ve been asked to write a guest post and all of a sudden you have a blank page staring you in the face and no idea where to begin.

Some call it “writer’s block.”

Weekend Worship—What's Gonna Be Your Wake-up Call?

by Brenda McGraw @BrendaMMcGraw

I walked into the doctor’s office not knowing what to expect. After all, I was only 24. The waiting seemed like it lasted forever, as I flipped through a magazine anticipating the nurse calling my name. I thought to myself, I probably don’t need to be here. It’s probably nothing.

When my name was called I met the nurse at the door and she showed me to my room. It was white, and seemed cold. But don’t most examining rooms? She asked me my name and why I was there to see the doctor.

I told her I had found a lump in my left breast. I said, “I am sure it’s nothing, but my mom wanted me to have it checked. You know how moms are, always worrying?” She took a few notes for the doctor and told me the nurse practitioner would be in shortly.

That day started the beginning of a year-long battle with breast cancer and reconstruction surgeries. Being so young, I really thought I would just be told “Don’t worry, it’s nothing.” No one else in my family ever had cancer.

To hear the words “You have cancer” is devastating, and pretty scary, to say the least. Thus started the “wake-up call” and the call on my life to follow Christ. What’s a wake- up call? It is a defining moment in one’s life when he or she realizes something needs to change.

My defining moment was cancer.

For Peter, it was the rooster crowing when he realized what Jesus had said was true. He had turned his back on Jesus. This broke Peter and he went outside (alone) and wept bitterly.

For some it was the writing in the sand, the healing of a disease, or sight for the blind. Thomas had to touch the holes in the hands of our Savior. It took Nebuchadnezzar seven years in the wild with the animals. And do you remember the forty years the Israelites wandered through the wilderness?

However, for Judas it was too late.

Twenty-eight years ago God started waking me up to His plans and purpose for my life. I wish I could say I never strayed, but I can’t. After my cancer was removed, I put God back into my little God box. I pulled Him out again a few years later when I realized I was lost and He had not quit searching for me. God’s never been back in my box again. I prayed and asked Him to show me who Jesus is and that He would never let me stray again.

Have you heard the wake-up call? Can you pinpoint that defining moment in your life where you said, “Less of me and more of You, Lord?”

He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less. John 3:30 (NLT)
