Remembering 9/11

#neverforget

Today we honor the sacrifices made on 9/11 and the ongoing sacrifices made because of 9/11.

Most of you know that our oldest son served four years in the Marine Corps, with two tours in Iraq. Because of that, I’m passionate about supporting our military and their families.

Today I’ve decided to pre-empt my regular blog post schedule and take a moment to remember the attack on September 11, 2001.

I believe that remembering 9/11 is important, not just to honor the sacrifices on that day, but also to honor the ongoing sacrifices because of that day.

Most of us remember where we were that day.
My morning had started off a little calmer than usual. It wasn’t my week to drive in our neighborhood carpool, so I’d rushed the two youngest out the door to grade school first. Then the car horn sounded for our oldest son and, after a quick hug, he was off to middle school....

Read the rest of my post, A Marine Mom Remembers 9/11 on While They Serve. I'd love to hear your stories of where you were when you found out what happened and how it affected you.

Don't forget to join the conversation!

  1. It was my luck/misfortune to be in Bayonne, NJ unloading my truck. I had loaded a load of spices out of Reno, NV and stopped by home to take care of some things on the way. So I was there on a Tuesday. Normally I was there on Monday. As I left the shipper and headed to the interstate I noticed people looking and pointing across the river towards NY. That is when I saw the smoke. I pulled to the curb for a couple minutes. Having seen a C-130 plane crash in 1992 in Evansville and being interviewed by CNN, I realized things were going to get crazy quick. I decided to leave and go to the nearest truck stop. As I was going the announcer in the other tower said he had been told to evacuate but was staying. Suddenly that station went dead and somebody said over the CB that the other tower had been hit. Spent most of the rest of the day in the truck stop store watching the display TV. That was the fourth plane crash I had seen first hand in my life. Was in OKC, OK when that happened also, Kinda makes me wonder if I want to be around myself.

  2. Such a horrific day, Edie. I had just driven on site at Johnson Space Center in Houston where I worked. I pulled into the closest parking lot and sat for several minutes, stunned.

In my building, most if us sat in clumps, whispering and crying. Very few of my coworkers were old enough to remember the height of the cold war so this kind of fear was new to them. Growing up in the military in the 50s and 60s, I knew it all too well. I had this sinking feeling that the tenuous peace we'd had for several years was gone, probably for good. Unfortunately I was right.

  3. Like all of us I will never forget what I was doing that day. I was at a Ladies Bible Study at my church. We had just begun when the church secretary came into the room and made the announcement that the Twin Towers had fallen and the Pentagon had been bombed. That early after the event no one knew what had happened and that's what some reports thought. My husband was serving in the Navy and was at Eskan Village Saudi Arabia at the time. I thought if the Pentagon was being bombed so were all military bases and I immediately left to go home. I had no word of what was happening with him until that night. It was a long day for all involved and I was so relieved when I finally heard from him. God bless America and may we never forget those who died and the sacrifices our military, and emergency personnel make for us every day.
