YouTube for Writers Part 9: Mastering Upload Defaults and SEO to Get Your Videos Found
by Samantha Tschritter @SETschritter

If you are actively posting videos to YouTube, this will be one of the most helpful blogs you’ve ever read. In this post I’ll share helpful tips on uploading a YouTube video, by going through each category in the video description section.

If you are uploading a video, you may want to print this blog and use it as a checklist as you fill in the meta data. At the end, I will show you TWO TIME-SAVING TIPS you will not want to miss!

Watch me walk through this entire process step-by-step in the video, “Video Upload Settings: The Best YouTube Video Uploading Defaults

Saturate the title with keywords. The titles’ primary audience are the YouTube algorithm and the secondary audience is your viewers.

Title: A/B Testing
Creators, influencers, and authors are able to run trials of 2-3 titles and 2-3 thumbnails.
Pro: Find out which title and thumbnail are more appealing.
Con: Creating multiple titles and thumbnails requires extra time.

Description
There are entire videos about what to include in the description. Here’s a brief run down of content to include:
  1. A brief sentence or two about what the video is about. Use a hook and keywords.
  2. One sentence about what your channel offers.
  3. One to two sentences about who you are and what your qualifications are for the channel.
  4. Call to action.
  5. Your website
  6. Book links
  7. Social media links
  8. Newsletter sign up (mention giveaway!)
  9. Add up to 50 hashtags (You can actually upload up to 60, but if you go over 60, your video will be penalized.)
Set a thumbnail that stands out and draws viewers' attention.
In order to create a compelling thumbnail, click: Thumbnail Tips to Get More Clicks.

Playlists
In a similar fashion to the way Amazon promotes book series, Youtube promotes playlists. Make sure that each video is part of at least one playlist.

Audience
*Not made for kids.
Youtube is not asking “Is your content kid-friendly?” They are asking, “Is your content specifically made for kids?” If you click “Made for Kids,” Youtube sends your video to YoutubeKids.com and your video will not be seen on Youtube.com.

Paid promotion
If you received money, goods or services in order to create your video, click this box.

Collaboration
Invite a collaborator, if possible. Everyone who collaborates will share views and watch time.

Automatic chapters, Automatic places, Automatic concepts
These are all a matter of your personal preference.
  • Pro: Allowing YouTube to fill in this blanks often leads to greater visibility with the algorithm.
  • Con: Regarding the chapters and concepts, I once ran into the following problem: I recorded a miscarriage video. In medical terms, the definition of miscarriage is “a spontaneous abortion.” Therefore, Youtube included “concepts” of abortion with my miscarriage video. Allowing automatic places feels like a breach of privacy and another detail that AI could misinterpret
Tags
Many influencers say tags don’t help. I fill them out anyway because it’s one more place for key words. I save this data in a word document so I can copy and paste as needed. Tags are the actual phrases viewers would type into a search bar. Enter a comma after each tag.

Other:
  • Choose “Standard YouTube License” to protect your content.
  • Allow embedding—yes
  • Publish to subscriptions feed and notify subscribers—
  • I click “yes” for long form videos and “no” for shorts, since my short content is all taken from the long form videos.
  • Shorts remixing—yes
Category
In the past, the video’s category played a bigger role in sending video’s to the right audience, but choosing a category, if applicable, can only help.

MAXIMIZE META DATA on your channel.
There are so many places within your Youtube channel that you can plug in keywords and meta data. Be sure to utilize all of them!
  • Channel Description (Customize Channel)
  • Playlist Description
  • Video Description
  • Tags
  • Video Title
Visibility:
Private: Only you can see
Public: Everyone can see.
Unlisted: Anyone with the link can see

$$$ If you want to sell a Youtube video, you can keep it unlisted and provide the link after payment.
  • End Screen? Yes! (Choose the video for them.)
  • Cards? Yes!
  • Quizzes? Never done it. This is a new feature, but yes!
Channel Customization:
  • Change Photos.
  • Fill in the description of your channel.
  • Add your links.
  • Add your email address.
  • Add a watermark to your video. When viewers click on my watermark, it brings them to my channel.
TWO TIME-SAVING TIPS:
Upload Defaults:
  1. Go to “Your channel.”
  2. Go to “Your videos.”
  3. Click “Settings.”
  4. Click “Upload defaults.”
  5. Fill in the description and tags. When you upload a video, YouTube will automatically fill these in.
  6. Be sure to click both tabs within “Upload Defaults.”
Belated Video Edits:
  1. Go to “Your channel.”
  2. Go to “Your videos.”
  3. Click either the “Select All” box or the “Individual” boxes
  4. Click “Edit.”
  5. Be amazed.
This feature allows you to edit multiple videos at the exact same time. This treasure, that I bequeath to you, is a trick I did not learn until after years of uploading. It saves HOURS.

BONUS SECRET:
  1. Your channel.
  2. Customize Channel (This link is to the right of your profile photo.)
  3. Scroll down to Channel URL and “copy.”
