From Edie: Jesus is the Word and the Creator. Discover how going to Him for our words shapes Christian writers to bring light, clarity, and hope into the world.
by Audrey Frank @AudreyCFrank
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was fully God. The Word was with God in the beginning. All things were created by him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created (John 1:1-3).
This year, we are taking the first Sunday of each month to focus on one Spiritual Practice for Christian Writers: going to the Word for our words. To read last month’s edition, click here.
Jesus is the Word. He is also the Creator. He was there in the beginning, and all creative craft comes from Him. Words were His chosen medium, and with them He created the heavens and the earth. He made them with words.
Now the earth was without shape and empty, and darkness was over the surface of the watery deep, but the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the water. God said, “Let there be light.” And there was light! Genesis 1:2-3
The first thing God did with words was bring clarity. He spoke tight words and shed light words over the empty, shapeless dark. One needs light to work, and God made that His first act of creation.
Like our Creator, we can create with words. We bear His image and His creative word-power. But instead of making trees and birds, we have been entrusted with the power of transformation. The heavens and earth He created are groaning for redemption. We can write light words that push the darkness away, and with our words, we have the great power to separate light from dark.
Imagine you pick up your pen and write light words, sending them out into the darkness. Their beams reach beyond where you can see, permeating the darkness of a single mother who sits bereft by the bedside of her paralyzed son. Your light words give shape to the senseless accident that stole his mobility, and create hope instead of despair. She rises, able to face the next task because with your words, you separated the light from the darkness.
Picture the book you worked so hard to write shining in the darkness of a prison cell, a broken man weeping as he dares put the fragments of his life back together by the light of your hope words.
Envision the flash of dynamite as your words blow the chains off a young girl once bound by shame.
Imagine the power of going to the Word for your creative craft.
The beauty of going to the Word for our words is that we join Him in making all things new.
The same Spirit that hovered over the surface of the waters in Genesis 1 invites us to join Him in the work of bringing clarity to the shapeless empty spaces in today’s poly-traumatized world.
Writers, let’s go to the Creator for our words this year. Surely we have the best job ever…we write for the Word Himself!
Lord, give me words to transform the world you made. Amen.

Audrey Frank is an author, speaker, and storyteller. The stories she shares are brave and true. They give voice to those whose words are silenced by shame, the hard things in life that don’t make sense, and the losses that leave us wondering if we will survive. Audrey and her family have spent over twenty years living and working among different cultures and world views, and she has found that God’s story of redemption spans every geography and culture. He is the God of Instead, giving honor instead of shame, gladness instead of mourning, hope instead of despair. Although she has three different degrees in communication and intercultural studies, Audrey’s greatest credential is that she is known and loved by the One who made her.
Audrey is the author of Covered Glory: The Face of Honor and Shame in the Muslim World (Harvest House Publishers), an outpouring of Audrey’s heart to introduce others to the God of Instead. Shame is not unique to the developing world, the plight of the women behind veils, young girls trafficked across borders; shame is lurking in hearts everywhere. Through powerful stories from women around the world, Covered Glory illuminates the power of the Gospel to remove shame, giving honor instead.
