When Writing Dreams Take Flight

by Edie Melson @EdieMelson

Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. John 12:24

I love dandelions. In fact, taking this particular picture mean I had to get down and dirty. In fact, I had to crawl around in the wet grass to get this perspective.

But it was worth the trouble. I snapped the picture just a millisecond before one of the seed tufts broke all ties with the original plant. As I was watching the seed drift away, I had some thoughts about what sends our own seedling dreams about our writing, soaring.

First, we have to be willing to work for our writing dreams. Sometimes that means getting into uncomfortable situations. Just like getting wet and dirty to take this shot.

One of two things has to happen for a dandelion seed to take flight.
  • 1) some sort of upheaval has to happen. That can mean wind, rain or even being bumped by something. Or
  • 2) death. In this case the dandelion flower has to shrivel and die before it lets loose of its seeds.

As I considered that, I realized the same circumstances hold true before our writing dreams to take flight.
  • 1) there must be some kind of catalyst for us to risk letting our dreams take off. Or
  • 2) we have to die to them—give them up to God's control completely. Sometimes only when we let them go can they break free and begin the journey from seedling to growth.

The next time you find yourself holding tightly to your writing dreams, consider what really needs to happen for those dreams to soar. I promise you, God has a plan. Don't give in to despair, instead let go, and what the amazing things that happen next!

  1. Great photo. I had to look at it for a while before I understood what it was. Excellent analogy.
