Writers Can Be a Blessing When We Use Our Words Well

by Tammy Karasek @TickledPinkTam

We writers have the opportunity to share a message for any who would come across the words we’ve tapped out on the keys. Whether we write a blog post, article or book, our written words can be read by somebody, somewhere over and over and at any time. With this opportunity also comes the responsibility of what words we share.

What a privilege we have as writers to be able to speak truth and hope into others’ lives, especially in our hurting world. We can share about the promises of God or even about how God has brought us through a difficult time. I don’t know about you, but I long for and cherish encouraging words I’ve read. Words that go deep and soothe my soul and also make me hunger more for God.

There are many sentences in books I’ve highlighted or underlined which a writer has shared that made my heart sing. Some writers have the ability to offer love, kindness and instruction within their words, which take us to a place of wholeness. When I come across those, I always thank God for giving those words, and the talent, to that specific writer which spoke to me in a way that got through my thick head.

Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. Proverbs 16:24 NIV

As we walk and work in the calling given to us by God, are we paying attention to what we say as well as how we say it? We need to be careful and make sure that the messages we write will bring glory to Him, not us. As writers—writing from a Christian worldview—we need to be confident that what we write will bring the gospel of Christ front and center to the reader.

When we write books or posts on the Internet, we can use words to encourage someone that we may never have the chance to meet in person. What a wonderful thing that is. Sure, we can entertain them, but at the end of our brief time together, have we carefully chosen words to point them to our Savior? Our words can uplift them, enrich their life or maybe even make them smile. Are we giving them our best?

It doesn’t matter what you’re writing, but the words you choose are very important. Are they edifying, encouraging or loving? Even when words are needed for instruction or correction, with thought and prayer, they can be delivered in a way that will bring another person’s spirit up. Chosen well, the right words could make a person want to know more about this God that you speak of. And isn’t that the main purpose for our writing?

We need to pay attention to the words we are using. We need to take our time and choose our words wisely when trying to get our message across. When we sit down to write, let’s ask God to help us share His words for those that will see them.

What are your thoughts on Words? We’d love to hear what you think in the comments below.

  1. Tammy, I love this. I'm going to incorporate the Scripture in a meme for my word for 2023, which is KIND.

  2. Thank you for this reminder of how influential our words are, Tammy. Proverbs 18:21 says both death and life are in our spoken words -- and I think the same is true for our written words. As we ask God to bless what we write, there is hope and truth (LIFE) in our words.

  5. Thank you, Tammy, for reminding us of the power of the written word. Reminds me of another proverb that applies to writing as well las speech: “A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver.” — Proverbs 25:11

  6. I always remind myself that my words are a gift from God the must be stewarded just like the parable of the talents. What an honor it is to have been entrusted with something so precious and powerful they can speak both life and death.
