How is 2018 shaping up for
you? Even though we are only a two weeks into this new year, I am finding
refreshment in viewing a calendar with a little extra space, at least for now.
I love feeling like the slate is clean and I have a second chance to meet all
my goals and accomplish all the things God has for me.
One of the things I always
make sure to put on my calendar is at least one writers conference for personal
growth as a writer. Writers need to take the next step in their writing
expertise and learn what is new in the publishing field.
What about you? Have you
planned to attend a conference this year? I would like to issue a personal
invitation to the Carolina Christian Writers Conference, March 9-10, 2018, in
Spartanburg, SC. This is an amazing opportunity to learn from professionals and
network with others in the writing world.
Why a conference? There is
really nothing that equals being in the presence of other people who understand
your dreams and desire to write to change the world. When a group of excited
writers gather there is electricity in the air. Just walking into the room you
feel the energy, and immediately your level of desire, commitment, and focus is
heightened.
What will I learn? This year
the Carolina Christian Writers Conference offers dozens of workshops that will
teach you something new, take you a step further with your current
work-in-progress, or encourage you to submit your work to a new market.
Workshops this year include Non-Fiction
Elements of a Good Pitch Sheet, Tips for Getting Book Reviews, Build Your Author
Platform, Writing Like Crazy, Practical Tips for Freelance Writers, Character
Arc: Change or Growth, Ten Mistakes That Make Magazine Editors Say No, Make
it or Break it Qualities in Novels for Children, Writing for Digital
Publication, and so much more. Learn what a book proposal is and how to write
one. Find out the newest writing opportunities. Have your urgent questions
about publishing answered.
Who will be the keynote
speaker? Todd Starnes of FOX News will be our keynote speaker this year. Todd’s
expertise in the journalism field is amazing and his excitement about writing
to change the world is over the top. If you have never met Todd, you will love
getting to know this high profile guy who cares so much about those of us in
every level of this business.
So, that’s it? I’ll come
take some classes and meet some people? No, there is lots more. Our amazing
faculty includes people whose passion is to help other writers succeed with
their writing dreams. This year Edie Melson, Les Stobbe, Nancy Lohr, Craig von
Buseck, Eva Marie Everson will be there along with many others. Special
features of this conference include professional panels, genre groups, lunch
together, “Lightning Learning,” and more. There is a bookstore. Larry Leech
will be leading a Friday morning optional (for an extra small fee) workshop
called, “Your Publishing Opportunities,” And Candy Arrington will offer a free
workshop called “First-Timers Preview.” Meetings with the faculty are available
for you to pitch your work. Manuscript critiques are available as well.
I’m sure I missed
something but please go over to fbs.org/writers and see all the details and
meet the faculty for the Carolina Christian Writers Conference.
I hope you will join us
for this special time together March 9-10. The learning is amazing, the
opportunities you will find will help boost your career, but most of all, the
networking and relationships you develop will result not only in professional
connections but some will be sure to grow into lifelong friendships. Our theme
this year is Hebrews 10:24, “And
let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good
deeds.”
