Get Started Writing Articles

by Linda Gilden @LindaGilden

Article writing can be a great place to start your
writing journey.
One of the pieces of writing advice new writers hear a lot is “Write what you know.” But for many, once they figure out what they know, the next question is “What do I do now?”

Of course, there are lots of answers. My favorite answer is that writing articles is a great way to get started on your writing journey. You may be thinking, Okay, so same question—what do I do now?

Articles can take you in several directions. Here are a few of them.

Personal Experience
A good place to start is with personal experience articles. After all, who knows your personal experience better than you. This type article is very popular with magazine readers. Everyone wants to know about other people. Just remember when you write your personal experience article you must find a way to make it relevant in the life of your reader. Caution: when writing a personal experience article don’t try to say too much. Decide on your main point before you begin writing and stick to that. If you need help with that, print your main point/theme and tape it near your computer.

Profile/Interview
The mainstay of magazines, the profile article is similar to a personal experience article but it is about someone else’s experience. When you see a single person on the cover of a magazine, there is usually a profile article in the magazine about that person. Just remember this is not a biography. Focus on what the person has done.

Devotional/Inspirational
For most new article writers, the devotional or inspirational article is a good place to start. Most people have had experiences where they have overcome something. Or perhaps in your devotional time you have made a discovery that changed your life. Share those things with others in a devotional or inspirational article. Make a single God-centered point that will turn readers to God and/or inspire the reader to become a better person.

Try writing one of these articles this month and discover a whole new world for your writing.
