Today is Grammar Day. If not for
Edie Melson’s regular Calendar Days posts, I would not have known this fact.
While I believe story is king,
grammar is an important part of our writing. Its proper use helps ensure a
pleasant experience for our readers. And, we hope, keeps them coming back for
more.
Researching the definition of grammar reveals myriad opinions. Some say
it is merely a set of rules governing the permissible sentence construct in a
given language. Some insist it encompasses morphology and syntax. Most writers,
however, include not only the aforementioned, but spelling and punctuation as
well. I know I do.
So to honor Grammar Day—and have a
little fun—I offer the following for your perusal.
Its of the upmost importance that we
are careful to use proper grammar when we right. They’re is no excuse for the
sloppy butchering of the english languish that we often sea today.
Never mine
that its tough enough to get published, we lesson hour passibilities farther
win oui use improper grammar. Sew, as Yoda wood say, respect our readers with
the proper use of grammar we must. Don’t axe me how to best learn grammar, wee
must all determine the manor that is most affective for us.

DeleteLove this post. Of course, I was mentally correcting it as I read.
ReplyDeleteThe mentally correcting must have been ur eternal predator working undertime. Thanks for reading. Have a blessed weekend.
DeleteThese kinds of things jump off the page at me when I am reading a book. I find myself screaming, "where was the editor
ReplyDeletewhen this slipped by?" Too many of them ruin a book for me. Think I'll do something like this with my writers group.
Me think its a gr8 idea to do sumthing like this in ur righters gang. I hope it make you smile. Have a blessed week.
DeleteJust the other day, a writer posted a quote that made me wince: "I want someone to lay down on the grass and watch them with me..." Sorry, but that should be "to lie down." Another favorite of mine: "Between you and I" instead of "between you and me." The problem is, when we hear something wrong all the time, we begin to think it's right. When we see it in print, it reinforces the incorrect belief.
ReplyDeleteMe egree, Linda. Many speek and right hatrociousle. Weed got to do sumthing to stem the tide. Thanks for stopping by. Have a blessed weekend.
DeleteEllen Andersen, I love your reply. Thanks so much for taking time to read my post. Please scroll down to the comment box next time so I can respond directly next time. Be blessed.
ReplyDeleteBruce, There are some issues with commenting for Ellen. The only way she can leave a comment is in line with an already published comment. We're working on solving that issue, but it's left us flummoxed. If you have any suggestions, we're open! Thanks & Blessings, E
DeleteEdie, If Ellen can bring her laptop to the next Cross N Pens meeting I'll try to figure it out.
DeleteThe editor and English teacher in me just had what I like to call a "come-apart." However, if anyone has tried to teach English in the South like I have, this is oh so familiar. Love it, Bruce! I'm just blessin' your heart quite near all over the place over here!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Paula. Bless your pea-pickin' heart for suffering through it. I do appreciate your taking the time to stop by. Have a blessed week.
