Thursday Review: A Copyright Quiz—Do You Know Your Rights? (Part One)

Lately, I’ve seen a lot of discussion about copyright issues. Specifically, what is legal to use on a blog, website or in a book.
Today, instead of giving you all the facts, I thought we’d have some fun and take a little quiz.

And to sweeten the pot, I’m offering a copy of the Christian Writer’s Market Guide 2012. Everyone who leaves a comment BEFORE 5pm EST Saturday, March 24, will be entered in a drawing for the book.
And don’t worry, I WILL post the answers next week, in a follow-up post.
COPYRIGHT QUIZ—HOW FAMILIAR ARE YOU WITH THE LAW?
True or False:
  1. I can legally post any picture on my blog if I link back to the place I got it.
  2. I can legally use a song’s title in a post, article or book.
  3. I can legally use someone’s blog post as long as I give them credit and don’t change anything.
  4. I can legally use music or a song as background for an original video as long as I credit the source.
  5. I can legally post YouTube videos on my blog or website.
  6. If I don’t make money off of it, it’s legal for me to use.
  7. I can legally quote a small percentage of the words to a song in a post, article or book.
  8. If I don’t have a copyright symbol on my work it’s not covered by copyright law.
  9. I can legally download photos from Facebook to use on my own site.
  10. I can legally pin anything to one of my Pinterest Boards.
  11. I can legally post a picture of a book cover I recommend or an reviewing.
  12. Copyright on written works expires 70 years after it was first published.

And...
Don’t forget to join the conversation!
Blessings,
Edie

  1. This is such a timely topic especially to those new to blogging. It is wrong to assume that you can repost anything to your blog without linking back or giving credit, but I need a brush up on what is right and what is not. Thanks for sharing.

  5. Great discussion and I can't wait to read your answers. I'm a lot more careful lately since one of the web designers I write for was charged $750 for using a photo without permission/payment. No second chances, no negotiation on the fee - her client received the letter in the mail and he passed it along to her since she manages his blog. That evening, I took all photos off my blog unless I was the photographer, had permission from the photographer, or bought them from iStock. Plus, I write an inspirational blog so I want to set an example of doing the right thing as far as what I post. Till then, I hadn't thought much about it. Thanks you!

  6. Eek, I'm not sure about most of these!! I've been operating under the ask for forgiveness, not permission... Can't wait to see the answers!

  9. Wow! Great post/quiz. I'd hope that as long as the author is given credit and/or source listed, it's okay to share but the lawyers probably disagree.... Looking forward to your reveal.

  10. You have perfect timing as I've been wondering about some of these things lately myself. I always credit the original source, but I'm not sure that's enough. I'll be very interested to hear the answers.

And if I won the Writer's Market guide, it'd wouldn't be awful. :)

  11. This is killing me! I'm dying to answer everyone's questions right now. But don't worry, I'm taking notes and the post will go up on Tuesday.

  12. I'm not very good at legaleeze, but I sure would like the Christian Writer's Market Guide, so here goes. I think it is ok to use videos and photos on my blog as long as I give credit where credit is due AND as long as there was nothing stated about needing permission or purchase. I sure hope I'm right because I post a music video twice a week on my blog...aurgghhh :)

  13. I'm looking forward to the answers. I think I know, but on a few I'm not sure. I wonder sometimes how reliable the free photo sites are.

  18. I know the answers to some of these, others I'm not sure. And with some I'd never thought about. I always learn a lot from your blog. Just wish I didn't have to wait five days to find out the answers.

  19. I really appreciate all the comments you've made! Several of you have mentioned how hard it is to wait on the answers. I planned it this way because I wanted to give more folks a chance to enter the drawing.

The chance to win the book by commenting will end at 5pm EST on Saturday. You'll still be able to comment after that, but it won't enter you into the drawing.

  20. I'm like Cathy...fairly new to blogging so I NEED to educate myself on these issues. So far, all written material and photos have been my own, so no worries there. We all appreciate you, Edie!
