Are you looking at your book budget and thinking, “God, I have no idea how I am going to afford this?” Or maybe you’re wondering, “What even is a book budget?”
If so, then you have two reasons to be encouraged. One, you’re in the right place. And two, you’re not alone.
A book budget is a simple plan that helps you prepare for the costs of self-publishing your book so you can move forward with clarity and confidence.
Personally, when I began looking into self-publishing, I was overwhelmed with all the questions, and one of the most pressing was, “how much is this going to cost?”
Both self-publishing and traditional publishing have their pros and cons, but their main differences come down to rights, control, speed, and responsibility. Part of the responsibility that comes with self-publishing is personally covering all of the upfront costs.
From hiring a professional editor (you don’t want to skip this), to finding a good cover designer, to formatting and marketing, there are a lot of little pieces to the puzzle.
It can feel overwhelming at first, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. Planning ahead for your potential costs will save you time, money, and stress later. As a self-published author, it is wise to be intentional and prioritize what matters most when investing in your book.
Some expenses are optional but highly recommended, while others are required. Sure, you can cut costs by designing your own cover or hiring a friend to be your editor, but if you can, I encourage you to hire professionals. This allows you to focus your time and energy on writing, networking, and marketing while leaving some of the more technical details to the experts.
Counting the Cost of Being an Author
Think of what it will cost you to write your book, not just financially, but in time, discipline, sacrifice, and dedication.
In Luke 14:28, Jesus is speaking about the cost of being His disciple but we see the principle of counting the cost and that can apply to many different areas of life.
“But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it?”
Just as there is wisdom in a builder who budgets before beginning construction, so there is wisdom in the writer who budgets before publication.
A lot of aspiring authors hope their book will succeed, but proper planning turns your hope into a realistic strategy.
The Top 3 Reasons Why You Need to Have a Book Budget
1. It Protects You From Costly Mistakes
This is probably the biggest one. If we overpay for services we don’t need or skip services we do need, it can cost us in the long run. A clear budget is a safeguard so you don’t waste time and money on things that won’t move your book forward.
2. It Takes Away The Stress and Overwhelm
When we just shoot in the dark with a “I’ll-cross-that-bridge-when-I-get-to-it” mentality, things seem fine in the moment, but we are prolonging the potential stress that our future self will have to deal with. A little planning now goes a long way and gives you peace throughout the process.
3. It Forces You to Prioritize What Actually Matters
Not everything in self-publishing carries equal weight. A budget helps you stay focused and put your money into the things that truly impact quality and credibility. Like editing, formatting, and cover design.
Think About Questions Like:
- Which expenses are non-negotiable? Which are optional?
- Do you need developmental editing, line editing, or just proofreading?
- Will you hire a custom cover designer, or use a template to save money?
- Are you formatting the book yourself, or outsourcing it?
- What is your estimated total budget?
- How can you trust God to provide?
Part of the beauty of self-publishing is the flexibility it gives you. You have full control over your decisions, which means you can adjust your budget based on what works best for you.
As you think through your total budget, it also helps to understand where your book will be published and what platform you will use.
Self-Publishing Through Amazon KDP
Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is Amazon’s free, self publishing platform. It allows authors to upload their book files and sell directly through Amazon. It is one of the most widely used platforms for indie authors because of its simplicity and accessibility.
While there are other self publishing platforms available, many authors choose KDP because it offers a straightforward way to publish and reach readers.
Your Book Budget
Now for the fun part! Grab a notebook where you can dream, organize, and track all your expenses along the way. Write down your expected costs, keep notes or receipts on what you spend, and stay organized as you move through the publishing process. This will help you stay intentional and avoid surprises as you bring your book to life.
And Remember - Where God Guides, He Provides
Don’t let finances, or lack thereof, keep you from writing the book that God has placed in your heart. You may have heard the old sayings, “where God guides, He provides,” or “His will, His bill.” They may sound simple, but they are true.
Our part is to do what Matthew 6:33 says “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness”, and in doing so we can trust that God will do His part of adding everything else unto us.
Take some time this week to pray over your book, your budget, and your next steps. God has called you to write this book, and you can trust that He will provide all you need to publish it.
