Living in the Moment

by Edie Melson @EdieMelson

Forever is composed of nows. - Emily Dickinson

In these days of instant access to cameras and social media, it's easy to get caught up in recording the moment instead of living in the moment. How do you combat that danger?

  1. I have always loved Emily Dickinson. Thank you for this quote. It is so true. I find myself busy making the moments a memory for later rather than living in it fully now. We miss out on so much that way. I'm going to try to be more diligent about soaking up moments rather than recording them.

  2. Amazing post Edie, I will certainly twit this post. I love Emily Dickson's quote, it's old, but still relevant today.

    You have a wonderful weekend.

  3. Love is one way. It was raining, a glorious rain filling the sky, saturating the streets and occasionally blowing under the awning, wetting my clothing. I longed for my daughter to be with me. Rain, like books, stories of friends, and prayer needs, is something we share in deepness. I took photos to send to her. I stayed in the moment because the act was of love and became integral to the moment. I didn't realize this until your question. I normally won't photograph while in the moment - it's propensity is to pull me away from it. But, for love...

  4. I try to breathe in my surroundings, make all my senses part of what I'm doing or experiencing. I call the feeling "awareness of life." Makes me appreciate every moment even more...

  5. Edie: A friend once preached a sermon about living in the moment. I know people who choose to dwell on the past to the point of depressing those around them. I had not heard this thought from Emily Dickenson. It makes sense. One reason we should enjoy the nows is because we don't know what the future will bring. Blessings.

  6. Often I will see a beautiful sunset, or a clear, blue sky, or a colorful bird, and I'll say, "You did that Father, thank you." Moments like that snap me out of the routine, and put me in the presence of eternal truth; the beauty of God's creation. Tension fades, and I continue on with a greater appreciation for what matters.
