Genre Talk—Steampunk—You May Know More About It Than You Think!

Many of you know that besides training writers about social media and the craft of writing, I'm a full-time writer. I've published four non-fiction books, with two more due out January of 2014.

But the dream of my heart has always been to write fiction.

Specifically science fiction—known in the Christian writing circles as Speculative (Spec) Fiction. And I'm making significant headway toward that goal.

I have a scifi series I'm working on—the first book is finished and hanging around at several publishing houses while they decide if it's worth making into a book. (A truly scary sort of waiting game and another post entirely.)

I'm also actively working on a new series that I'm unbelievable excited about...Steampunk Fables.

These books retell beloved fairy tales and fables. Here's my tagline and header for a new site I've started for this endeavor:

But one thing I've discovered is that many people don't know what Steampunk is. Actually they do, they just don't know what it's called.

The Steampunk movement is a unique mix of past, present, and future. It’s a juxtaposition of victoria-era mannerisms, steam-driven gadgets and gizmos, and science fiction world building. It’s way more than a genre, and it’s influence touches everything from home décor to current clothing trends.

The foundation of this movement can be found in the literature and architecture of the late nineteenth century, but it’s so much more. It’s dirigibles, Jules Verne, and the music of Abney Park. And they’re all wrapped up in bustles, top hats and goggles.

Steam dreams affect both men and women from all walks of life. Anyone who ever wished for an alternative history can be enticed into its gentle ambiance.

On my new blog I’ll be posting articles about steam-driven gatherings, music videos, and DIY Steampunk projects.

So join me here on Steampunk Fables as we explore the new, the old, and alternative mysteries that populate this rich universe.

Now that you've been reacquainted with Steampunk, do you have a favorite book, TV show, and or movie you'd like to recommend?

Don't forget to join the conversation!
Blessings,
Edie

    1. Pam, good call (and I LOVE that movie). It's a little past the Victorian era, but has the clockwork and steam-driven feel. Thanks for stopping by, Blessings, E

  3. Is the oldie, "Chitty, Chitty, Bang-Bang" classified as steampunk?
I love your post. It was most informative. I'm wondering where the "punk" part fits in? :)

  8. I'm so glad you posted this. I've heard this term and had NO CLUE! Would the show "Once Upon a Time" be considered steam punk? Marlee and never miss an episode...she loves trying to figure out which fairy take character they are leading up to next...

    1. Not really. Steampunk has two main characteristics, steam-driven devices and victorian setting. It can be an alternative history or even scifi, but has to have a strong victorian vibe. The fairy tale/fable thing is just my idea. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is another movie with the steampunk feel. Hope this helps some. Blessings, E

  9. Awesome post, Edie. I love the victorian era, fantasy, and fairy tales, so I'm excited to learn more about Steampunk. BTW, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was one of my childhood favs ~ and Mary Poppins too. :)))
