Making Memes with iPiccy

by Cynthia Owens @EfficiencyADict

Reviewing iPiccy, a free online photo-editing tool.

I’ve long been a fan of PicMonkey and Canva’s photo-editing websites, but when PicMonkey changed to a fee-based service in late September, I looked for other options. Don’t misunderstand—I’m still a PicMonkey fan. I just prefer to share tips about free tools whenever possible. Enter iPiccy.com, a robust and still free online photo-editing tool.

Here’s why you may want to take a look at iPiccy:
  • It covers your basic photo-editing needs.
  • It’s free.
  • It has a slew of extra features.
  • It has one of my all-time favorite color tools—the eyedropper. More about this in a minute.
To see how easy it is to edit your pictures and add text, watch this step-by-step video for making memes with iPiccy.

Now, for more about that eyedropper feature…

What It Does: The eyedropper lets you match colors in any picture.

How It Helps: Say you have this beautiful picture you want to use to market your latest book. The blue color in the background would really make your text pop, but it’s not a standard color and trying to match it is taking a lot of time. The eyedropper lets you point at the blue spot on your picture and instantly match that exact shade. No more wasting time trying to find something close. BAM! Color matching solved.

Note: The Eyedropper tool can be found in a number of photo-editing programs, but not a lot of people know it’s there. Once you use it, you’ll wonder why no one told you about it sooner. You can see how to use the eyedropper in iPiccy by watching the video embedded above. (Eyedropper tips start at the 6:30 timestamp.)

Here's the finished version of my Facebook cover:

Do you have a favorite program you use to edit photos? Is it free or totally worth the price? I’m always eager to learn about great tools for writers. Share your top pics and why you like them in the Comments section below.

  1. Thanks so much Cynthia. I had used Picmonkey for almost a year now, just recently saw that I could not save my pictures without signing up for a free trial. I don't create meme's often, so was looking for something else to use for free. This post is perfect timing. I can't wait to try IPiccy.com. Thanks for the step-by-step lesson, and especially the tip about the eye-dropper. I knew there must be a way to pick up colors from the picture, but didn't know what the tool was or where to find it. Great post and one I will save for future reference. Thanks again.

  3. Ms. Cynthia, thank you so much for your helpful video and review. Am fairly certain I am adding iPiccy to my "toolbox" as this appears easier than Visio(R), PaintShopPro(R) or other methods I've used in the past on royalty free graphics. You're the best!

  5. I've been a PicMonkey junky for years. When my free supply was suddenly dried up, I went threw withdrawal symptoms. I was so down searching for other sources didn't enter my mind. Thanks for sharing your discovery with us. I look forward to spending time in iPiccy. Share on!

  7. Cynthia, I use Canva and PicMonkey paid version. The only distraction with iPiccy is the adsense at the bottom. Any way to get rid of that? Is there a paid version? Thanks for the heads up, btw.

    1. Tina, you can register for an iPiccy account, but adsense may still show. One way to deal with stationary ads is to open your internet browser as a window instead of letting it cover your full computer screen. This way you can move the window until the ads no longer show. It's a low-tech solution, but it works.

  8. Enjoyed the video about iPiccy. The only thing I don't like is that you can't change it once you add text. I've been using the paid version of PicMonkey for several years now -- and they have several paid options -- and it works for me. But I do a lot of graphics for my blog and for Instagram. I also like PicMonkey's Hub, where you can save an image and go back in and work on it some more.

    1. I agree--PicMonkey's hub is great. For those considering a paid version, PicMonkey has a lot of features for a reasonable price.
