Find New Markets by Writing Different Types of Articles

by Linda Gilden @LindaGilden

Once I received an assignment to write an article of 2000 words on family reunions. I wrote the article and had lots of additional information. So I pitched another article to a different magazine about “Ways to Entertain the Children at a Family Reunion.” And another called “Best Plans for a Family Reunion.” I probably could have come up with a few more had I not moved on to something else. But since I had already done the research, it was a win-win for both me and the magazine editor.

Are you looking for a new market for your articles? Or maybe you have just completed your research for an article and have a storehouse of information on your subject. Use that leftover information and use a different format to write another article.

Here are a few additional articles you might try.

Calendar article
A calendar article is one that in any way relates to a season, holiday, or anniversary. Some of the seasons are pretty self-explanatory such as January—new beginnings, February—love, March—springtime or Easter, etc.  Avoid the predictable (What Christmas means to me, First Thanksgiving) and look for a new slant in you are writing about the holidays. If you have just finished an article on “Learning How to Knit” and a gift-giving season (Christmas, Mother’s Day, etc.) is coming up, pitch an article on “Gifts Knit Together with Love” or “The History of the Craft of Knitting.”

Round-Up Article
This type of article is fun to do and readers love them. The round-up is just what it sounds like—you are rounding up many points of view on the same topic. Solicit observations on several different people to inform, instruct, or inspire your readers. Make sure you choose people from all demographics—different ages, from many parts of the country, etc. Come up with a good strong topic and you will have people eager to comment.

Issue Article
Some writers shy away from articles that have to do with issues, especially those that are controversial. An issue article presents both sides of an argument so be sure to balance your comments. This is not the place to get on your soap box. Many issue articles spring from stories in the news. Often you can get ideas for issue articles from the news. Today we daily hear of social issues, political issues, personal issues, and more that can make great subjects for articles.

Try writing a type of article you have never written before. You may find a brand new area of places to market your articles.
