Facebook Basics for Writers

by Edie Melson @EdieMelson

Today I'm sharing another screencast. I've talked with a lot of people lately who are confused about Facebook profiles, pages and groups. This video will hopefully make that a lot more clear.

I'm also sharing how to unpublished a Facebook page and how to delete a Facebook page.

It's not a long video, only ten minutes. So after you've watched it, but sure to share your questions and thoughts in the comments section below.

Don't forget to join the conversation!
Blessings,
Edie

  1. Great lesson, Edie. I wished I had had this a few months ago when setting up my blog FB page. Once a FB page has been established, such as the one for my blog, how would I continue to get likes? I sent out a general invite to those on my personal page and have added the buttons to my blog site page, but my numbers do not seem to be growing after the initial invite. Is there something else I can do to attract others to my FB page? Also, at some point, I can change the FB address for my page that would make it easier for people to find. Can you show how to do that? I have looked at it, but am afraid to do it because I don't fully understand how and know I can only change this once on FB. Thanks for the instructions and information.

    1. Sheryl, a FB page can be a valuable tool, but it's difficult to grow a following there. I have several posts about the pros and cons of a page vs. a personal profile.

Here's another one I wrote on The Author Roadmap, detailing how to get more visibility on a FB page:

I recommend you wait to change your FB URL until you decide what you want to do. I hope this helps! Blessings, E
(BTW, the links aren't clickable. Just copy and paste them into your web browser to visit those pages)

    2. Thanks Edie...I have read both articles and added a followers button to my FB personal profile. Even though I have FB pages for both my blogs, I believe I might start posting to my personal page again. Your articles were very helpful. :-)

  2. Thank you, this was helpful. How many pages can you have? God bless.

    1. Jann, you can have as many pages as you want. But be careful, it's much better to multiply your audience in one place, rather than divide them into tiny bits. Blessings, E

  3. Maybe you can answer a question, Edie, since I've contacted FB twice and receive a robo reply. When I go to my page (under my page ID), at the top, it still shows it being my timeline with my personal timeline home feed. I can't get to my page home feed like I used to do a month ago. Do you know if this is something they've changed lately?

    1. Sandra,

I experienced the same thing as you and contacted Facebook. They actually replied! So, I wrote a tutorial based on their reply. http://bloggingbistro.com/5-changes-to-facebook-pages-tutorials/ It should help you navigate all the changes they made to Pages. Long story short, you're actually on your Page, even though it looks as if you're on your personal timeline.

Edie, I enjoyed your screencast; will share it with my peeps. What software do you use to do screencasting? I will be investing in some for an online course I'm developing, and this looks like a good one.

    2. Thank you, Laura! That's a great post that helped me realize those were FB changes and nothing was broken. I must say, you're much more useful than Facebook support! :)

    3. Laura, thank you so much for answering Sandra's question! That's what I love most about this community!

I use QuickTime on my Mac to do all my screencasts. Blessings, E

  4. Thanks for sharing, Edie. I have multiple (business, book character fan page, and personal) FB pages, but wonder if I should have set up an author page for all my writing projects a long time ago. As you know, there are so many different opinions on that matter ... This post is another great reminder I need to spend time with you at Blue Ridge to discuss this, a few other platform building issues, and a few of my blogging dilemmas too. I'm working on my list. :/ Can't wait to see you! :)
